Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna “Armed Women”

The artist Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna was born in Lima, Peru in 1973. She lives and works in Bordeaux. Asking the question of identity and gender, his artistic turned to sculpture, textile design, photography and installation. Presenting as an observer of social codes, the artist tries to show existing reports, including the report male / female, no ulterior political thought.
His series “Armed Women” consists of 10 photographs of 190cm on 100cm. Luna Pozzi-Escot Rustha is staged in archetypal representations of women around the world, reusing iconography fed by a Western perception. It embodies these ten individuals who seem to do that, materializing in the artist herself.
“I present myself as an actor in some of my pieces, I appropriating gestures and clichés that introduce the viewer into a space-time known. In no case is a self-portrait, but a stage within which the main character is a woman. ‘

This approach echoes the artistic experiments of Cindy Sherman, who asked among other things, the image of the woman in the history of art and the perception of it in the modern world. Work Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna enriches this by bringing a new dimension: it is not as “the” women she depicts, but also their iconography. For this, it reuses the attributes of daily and feminine intimacy to make costumes: women “Western” is wearing a jacket made ​​of flesh tones and low false eyelashes, “Asia” is in a kimono cosmetic pads, “Andina” wears a darling and held in portfolio … This center bringing a major concern of the artist: the attributes of gender and “cultural” that define the individual.

In fact, women represented by Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna are all armed: the border between armed women and femmes fatales are sometimes tenuous. Weapons are generally attributed to males, this can give the series a psychoanalytic dimension: women filling their desire for masculinity by wearing an attribute coating a phallic connotation. These people are in a world where the border is kind of not quite fixed and where the artist chooses to embody this duality plastically male / female. It is both at once: with a manly cowboy doll physics, Geisha docile with a nunchaku or a mythological figure ready to fight. With humor and finesse, the artist manages to induce a reflection on our own identity: can appropriate the constituent codes of a kind?

By their size photographs Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna gives an impression of power from these armed women. They dominate the viewer while giving a sense of security. We find ourselves in an in-between, blurring induced by a non-defined genre: women who take us back to the image of the mother, but men, bringing us undoubtedly the father.
Of his photographic work, Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna makes sculptures in resin and aluminum powder of 45 cm. Marking a form of distancing his own image while preserving the essence of the questions related to his work, this medium gives the series another symbolic that the doll. Diverting the archetypal vision wants the boy to play toy soldiers while the little girl playing with a doll, Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna offers a synthesis of the two, located in a no man’s land where the genre any resemblance a figurine blonde bimbo look would be quite coincidental.
By its questions on gender, Pozzi-Escot Rustha Luna has a rich and relevant to the female image throughout the world. These women with masculine attributes embody a form of equality which is, unfortunately, not yet on the agenda in our modern societies. It is also one of the roles of art, to be ahead of his time …
